Air powered planisher

The shop I work in has a lovely home-made air powered planishing hammer. It's just the neatest thing since slice bread in my book!
It does a marvelous job smoothing freshly dished pieces and does it quite quickly.
I set it on 40 psi for the first run through and then drop it to 20 psi for a second run through for a slightly smoother finish.
Saves me time and wear and tear on my (somewhat aging) arms!

Why do you keep sliced bread in your book? Do you like it flatter than normal?

I'll try to remember to take a camera to the shop.

The shop I'm working in is an improvement over the shed I used to use. That, and I have closed out five old orders in the last month from the naughty list... a long long way to go, but it's a start.

Nice design, now lets get a pic of where the shaft meets the motor. I have been thinking about building a similar beast.

No motor... the top arm has a smallish air hammer and the bottom the rounded die to hammer on... very simple device... not mine, but I get to use it!

If the air hammer is just over the anvil, what is the whole thingie on top going back, having weights, bells and whistles on it? Is it a foot pedal for triggering the hammer?

it is to raise the hammer so the work can be inserted or removed

The big arm across the top and down the back attaches to a foot pedal contraption used to activate and control the speed of the hammer.

Yesterday I even finished out a 14 ga. mild steel shield boss with it. Granted, I had to crank it to 80 psi but it did a marvelous job! The boss is in this pic.

Eh, it works for cheese sandwiches, by those folding electric hot plates.
Also very well for a sandwich:
- 1 slice cheese, 2 if it's a large sandwich
Peanut butter, spread as thick as for a PBJ
Sweet green relish, 1 tablespoon
The relish lends a bit of piquancy along with a sweet note, and a little moisture to the whole. A filling lunch, especially accompanying a soup. The sandwich is done when the cheese and peanut butter are starting to melt onto the griddle plate. Give it time to cool a bit, too, as the peanut butter especially retains a lot of heat.
I don't know if Vegemite would fight with this sandwich or not.

Ok.... now show us the compressor that's running that thing.
For those of you who have never looked into this.... that's the expense. Not the hammer part.

The compressor is quite large as it runs a variety of air tools all through the shop. I think it's about 7 ft high and quite large around.
