Rawhide for shields/bucklers X-post

Post by Mahiro Shukosa »

Hello all, I was just wondering if anyone knew of a source for rawhide in sheets suitable for making a small to medium sized center boss buckler. I would need enough for a 14-16" diameter buckler in about 7-10 layers, thick as possible. If anyone on the archive has any sources they know of, I would be most appreciative.

I have just started experimenting with Rawhide Dog Bones. My first experiment piece is soaking as we speak so I don't know how it will turn out yet.

Some of the larger Bones should give you enough to play with though.

Wow...where are you able to find bones that size? The only ones I have been able to find give you really long pieces, nothing like the sheets I am hoping for (14 X 14").

Try Weaver Leather. They might have something for ya. You will need to either call them or order their catalog though, there is no online catalog. I'll look through their catalog tonight and see if there is anything that will work for ya.

If you look for Native American handicraft sources, you will find thick rawhide for Plains Indian shields. Modern ones will be a bit thinner than the old ones, but if you laminate two together, you should get the thickness you need.

Personally, I have thought about doing this ever since seeing a mention of leather tourney shields in Ffoulkes. But the price of rawhide is prohibitive. Still, a really light shield that doesn't need edging and will put up with a lot of abuse is a very tempting thing...

Crazy Crow Trading Post is the last place I remember seeing them.
