Not that I'm planning on getting one, or recommending one...but has anyone seen one of these in person?

Not in person but that's what Weta did for the bulk of the Lord of the Rings maille.

the most important thing is how are the links joined? mechanically or witha glue our chemical weld? if just butted, unless the plastic is very rigid they shed links like sequins in a tornado. maybe ask for a sample?

I'd heard this, and also that they'd done the same (not WETA, but whoever produced it) for Kingdom of Heaven.

And Arn the Templar and some other movies as well, it's a rather distinct look when you know what to look for but it does look fairly okay on the screen or at a large distance..

The Ring Lord has started carrying plastic rings, but I haven't seen any flat ones yet, just round.

From my understanding, there are molded ones like you can find at the ringlord, and the flat rings are essentially pvc that has been been cut down one side, then cut to rings. most of the flatrings I've seen are butted, but look decent for costuming. most are worthless for strength, but I have seen a few people melt/hotglue the butted ends together to prevent them slipping open. I saw one where the guy had erected a spiral cutting jig to make a large helix from a pvc pipe and then cut them to overlap. they looked a little goofy, but closer to riveted. I think some of the molded ones use a pin and hole to prevent the ring from just opening with movement. I know a few art majors who have used it, and they say that the rings rarely break, but
I do doubt their authority to make any claims as they also claim that 18g galv ChAiNmAiLLE is bullet proof

Most of the pin closure rings for point-of-sale signage are made of POM (Delrin).
