Erik Schmid had some pictures of welded maille up on his site, but it is down for construction at the moment.

Basically, the rings look like butted rings, but there is a blob of solidified, once-molten metal at the butt joint.

Try here. I believe This mail is made on a Whiting and Davis machine, or at least something very similar to it. They build welding rigs that creat the "Shark Suits". It is butted and appears to be resistance welded at the but join. Makes a nice and smooth butted mail appearence that is strong as well. My hauberk now has two practices in it and no sign of wear, course I need a few real heavy duty bouts in it before I would call it rattan proof.
