Int. Level of polish?

Post by Troy »

How "High polish" do most people make their stuff? I am working on some maile and plate legs, and just started final finishing of the parts, and am wondering how perfect a finish to go.

What I have now is pretty good... you can see yourself, but if you look closely you can see some light scratches across the surface. I an considering leaving it that way, as I kind of doubt that with some use you would ever be able to tell it had a high polish on it anyway.

If I get a truely mirror polish finish on stainless, what are the chances it will stay that way? Will it end up with that fine scratch effect after a month or so's wiping down anyway?

If you bring it to a mirror polish it will show signs of wear after time. It will still maintain a high polish but, you will be able to see scratches. I polish my stuff about once every three months and it looks pretty good most of the time.

I just give mine the 3m scrub & oil treatment about twice a year. It keeps it looking like steel, but there's no mirror finish.

I think that mirror surfaces are wasted on armor. The simple reason is this: anywhere you have metal rubbing other metal (like an articulation) it's going to create a wear spot that will show up a lot more on a mirror polish.

Then again, it's all a matter of opinion.
