For Steve the rivetted maille maker.

Post by Sasha »

Hi. Sorry for the general publication, my email has a virus so i am not using it till it gets fixed ('tis only "icecubes", but it is still annoying).

steve. Any chance of getting a confirmation or likelyhood of your jumping on a plane and experiencing Australian hospitality and teaching at the Oz Hammer-inn?

Just to refresh the memory, the dates are June 9-12.

You would be offered accomadation, food, more questions then you know what to do with, a lot of good people to make noise with and a tourguide for "doing melbourne" and surrounds.

I don't suppose an answer (you can send me e-mail, I just can't send FROM it) before 4pm local time is possible (about 6 1/2 hours). We are leaving for Festival and it occurs to me that we sort of lost communication a bit...so I am not sure iif I can "advertise" your attendence or not. Image

there are a whole lot of people that are seriouse about rivetted maille around here....they just need a visit by a guru (you know how that works).

anyway. got to get back to packing. I will check here and on the e-mail just before we leave.

Sorry, Sasha, but I can't afford the trip out. I'm saving for a house! Image

Actually, I'm saving for an armour shop with sleeping quarters and a bathroom. Image

I know just what you mean (in terms of 'workshop with living area attached). we have bought ours, the hammer inn will be the first event after we move in.

Oh well....can't blame you Image maybe next year.

...or maybe we get you to teach remotely by webcam.

Cyber armouring.

I've actually seriously considered this. However, web-cam performance doesn't seem to be "real-time" - it's laggy.

However, my friend has a digital camcorder and we are thinking of making a "how to" video production about maille.

An honest-to-Christu instruction video about making rivetted maille? With a section on making rivetted maille tools? That would be, well, indescribably awesome!

Rivetted-maille tools aren't any good. They are too floppy and they conduct too much heat. I tried using a hammer made out of rivetted maille and it didn't work at all.

And the cold-chisel I made out of maille didn't do a bit of good either.

I think I will just stick to making my tools out of fairy-floss and roofing silicone like God intended.

Can you tell we haven't left yet. We have just finished packing the car. Means we will get there about 6am tommorrow. Joy.

Acctually Sasha, Master Steve (Hammered Wombat) uses riveted mail dental floss and he claims any REAL armouer does the same. Infact he does this realy cool trick in which he chews up 16 guage wire and spits out riveted mail.

Apprentice Falon (the previous was a Joke and not to be taken as serious or offensive in any way. Any persons finding it so, should immeadiatly contact the authorities in thier area and file an official complaint with their respective states courts system......)

Sasha,
Hopefully by the time the Hammer in is on I'll have started my maile suit using Steve's tools and techniques. I'll be just a shadow of Steve's skill and knowledge but I will be able to point out problems I've had, sources for material in Australia ect.

P.S. I missed the Oz Armour Archive gathering at festival. Blaeney told me about it later. I did get to attend a class with Fabian, Corney and Marcus though so I'm back in the mood for hitting things with a hammer.

That would be great, Gawaiin.

beleive it or not, we thought that the refernece to "armouring" in the booklet was meant to indicate our meeting.... So the majority of us "armouring types" didn't turn up to listen to Corny, Fabian and Mark. Did Ii feel stupid when I heard about it later? I think I did.

I have heard Corny for a lot longer then 3 hours over the years, I have spoken pretty often to mark and I finally got a look at his copy of Brian's book (glad I didn't fork out $160 for THAT). The one I would really have liked to have listened and learned from was Fabian....
Oh well.

looking forwards to seeing you at the hammer-inn.

hmmm, SwordDancer, I've always found flossing with rivited maille works well too, but the floss always grabs and yanks out chunks of my beard, I don't find that to be a lot of fun, do you know how the Wombat avoids this problem? O btw although you and he likely know flossing with the zinc covered indian maille will leave a bad taste in yor mouth, and can give you flue like symtoms.
