What type of tool or what tips would you suggest for peening rivets within the top part of a helm bowl? If I had two helm halves and they had a strip that went down the seam of them from stem to stern, the strip needed be riveted to the halves. The hammer appears to pose some problems in reaching in there and peening the rivets unless it has a long head like one of those hammers used to skin doors of cars with. Is that hammer one I need for this with a peen on it? Or do they sell a hammer already made for this?

Just use a piece of metal dowel. A long punch with a flat head will work better though because it's hardened.
Basically put the end of the dowel or punch on the rivit to be peened and wack the punch or dowel with a hammer. Moving the punch around so that the rivit is peened properly.

I use a foot-long chunk of heavy bar stock that's been rounded off on one end. Basically use it as a pile-driver.

i have the same technique as gundo, but my bar is a gm axle drawn down into a taper, with about a 5/32 diam rounded tip i also use this taper for spear sockets, and hollow spikes on things like chaos armour.
be carful when peining with a bar as there is alot of weight behind the point, and if you slip there is a chance that youll marr the surface on the outside.

I agree with the above, but while we are com[aring what we made them from...
II took a ball-peen hammer head I no longer needed and welded a length of hexagonal barstock (I think it started life as a small pry=bar...so it is a bit harder then mild) and welded it onto the flat face of the hammer head.
This means that I get a drop-hammer type thing for peening rivets that works on a number of angles.
