The current riveted maille coming out of India isn't awful. It's actually fantastic for the price. But they do only flatten the overlap, which in my opinion adds to the "beer can tab" look. Also, they dip the stuff in a zinc-based paint which gives it that shiny grey look. But this also gives excellent rust protection.
It's not bad stuff! It's just not as good as mine!

not a bad price, even at the get it now price. I bought a simular shirt and coif for $1000 back when only museum reps offered them. While I wish I had paid less now, I can't say that it wasn't worth it.
if nothing else rivited shirts like this (and the ALU ones that museum reps and other places offer (7 lbs) should get rid of some of the fake armour in the movies.
