Need advice on treating aluminum

Post by schreiber »

Ok, so I was sitting around about a year ago, hitting myself on the head with a brick, and I thought, "Helmut, you need to be on the field in head to toe maille."

I have become somewhat obsessed with the idea of having a second armor in the "maille pyjamas" style.

Note, however, that I didn't hit myself the extra time that it would have taken me to want to do it out of steel.

Now I know some of you are cringing, but I can put up with going "click" instead of "tsching" when I walk. I do, however, want it to look good.

In an effort to keep from looking like a walking coke can, I thought I might firescale it somehow. Is this possible? I'd love to have an armor that I can just hit with a torch periodically to keep it looking good.

Also, any ideas as to where I can get punched or generally unbroken aluminum rings would be appreciated.

as far as I know you cannot fire scale aluminum, it will get dull with heat treating though takes the shine right out of it. Just dont melt it!!

I've never done it myself but I've heard that you could douse it with Hydrogen Pyroxcide to dull it down, but I suggest you test it first.

I guess what I'm looking for is a sort of blackened effect. I'm not keen on using an aniline dye or something like that. I was actually hoping I could burn something on that would last a long time and turn it a dark color.
