Well, ive read the corpora through along with the kingdom laws of Ansteorra, and I think im ready for my first SCA meeting with my local shire, La Marche Suavage. I will be entering the wonderful family of the SCA. *whipes tear away* We have some smiths in our local shire, so I think I can apprentice under one of them. I think what im trying to say is thank you all for your help, and i wont ever forget it. For those of you that go to tournaments in Ansteorra, I hope to see you someday. Thanks Image

Welcome to the SCA!

Here's a spot of advice - jump right into the action! In other words, don't be a wall flower!

Hopefully, if you're in a good group, when you show up people will fawn all over you and invite you to do cool stuff with them. But sometimes new people get overlooked. It's not intentional - often at a meeting people are gabbing with their friends about fighting, their latest project, etc. If you find yourself getting overlooked, start walking around shaking hands and asking questions!

I am a very very new member, only going to practices for a month and a half. But I went into it asking a million questions, (just ask some of the guys on this board), and I put together a working rig in a month and one week. Even though I have only actually fought one time, everybody there knows me and talks to me and invites me out with them, etc. I am young, 21, and very passionate, and if you go into it like a madman, people will notice and help push you along. Good luck my friend, perhaps we will see each other at Pennsic and we can cross swords. Image

better watch out where you stick that oversized letter opener Image Nah jk. I have a strange fondness for halberds, so take that!! ill be lookin for one as soon as im of "legal" age. Oh yeah, quick question. Can polearms be used in the SCA with their metal heads or do they put little rubber thingys on them. Thanks. When I turn 18, im probably gonna go to my first pennsic, we should hang out, talk to chicks, throw quarters on the floor,(if you dont understand this, i pity you) that kinda stuff Image

How old are you?
As an aspiring knight, I'm afraid I can't join you in the throwing of the quarters, but the rest sounds great.

Join a Larp and tell them you are a dwarf Image

Just because you arnt old enought to fight doesnt mean you cant goto practices and fight Image It really shouldnt matter unless your 4 ft tall

Furthermore....

it's not just the striking SURFACE. Saying that, it would sound like you could put a "rubber thingie" on the blade and you'd be good to go. Incorrect. Image

NK...I recommend this document:

http://www.ansteorra.org/publications/law/

Download the Kingdom Marshall's Handbook. It comes in two formats...PDF and HTML. Read it.

Also, you'll be able to better understand what's going on with our combat and the like once you've watched a fighter practice.

True Morgan.

I was trying to come up with a way to say it without saying "SCA weapons can't be made of metal." Of course, basket hilts, quillions, and pommels are sometimes made of metal.

I still can't think of a decent way to say it.

Just RTFM like you said! Image Image Image

hmm, i read the thing just now. So metal IS used in contruction, but it cant be sharp, and the blade after taping, must have 32mm cross section?

NK, it would be really good for you (if you are really serious about joining the SCA) to start regularly attending meatings and practices. Most likely, they will let you mess around and fight a little bit at practices. Even if they don't, you can learn alot by watching and listening and helping. Especially by helping the fighters (lugging around thier armour, helping them suit up, etc) you can start a back and forth relationship where you help them and they in turn help you out by giving advice and/or helping getting you suited up. It took me a little while to get suited up, but while I was working on my rig I never missed a practice, and every time I went I was helping everybody out and basically studying and mingling. By the time I took the field I was already fairly good friends with everybody there, comfortable with all of them, and knew how they fought. Just my piece of advice, from one newbie to another. NK: You've got the marshall handbook now, that's a good start. But the truth to be told, the best way to find out how weapons are made is to go look at some. Go to a fighter practice. Talk to the folks there. There are things that we could take an hour to type out that someone in your area can show in you 5 minutes. And the fact is, you'd read what we posted here and probably still need the help from the locals. Image Heck, when I make stuff, I get my knight's input STILL. Image
