How do you "roll" an edge?

Post by Aaron »

I thought....rolling an edge, how simple can that be? I'll look at the Armour Archive's essays section and start immediately....

http://www.armourarchive.org/essays/

....and there isn't any referances to how to roll an edge. There are referances to nearly everything else (and Gundo's Pembroke pattern has been updated and nicely formatted!! -- check it out!!)...but no referance to rolling edges.

So, how do you roll an edge.

(Yes, I know...with a hammer...but I'm looking for more specifics. Image )

With a hammer...

... and a chisel, and an anvil! Image

Seriously, I am not the person to answer this. I would be more than happy to make a "How-Do-I" section for essays, and include one from a person who does know (hint, hint).

Or, you could check the archives. I'd suggest "searching" the archives, except I had to turn search off.

Hmm, I note a "how-to" by Tom Justus. Now, if he'd give me permission to copy that essay to the Archive....

You'll need the corner of an anvil-like object, a hammer with either a slightly-rounded or resilient face [preferably both], and it'll be handy to have a vise.

For a simple rounded roll in a flat piece: scribe a line 1/4" from the edge of the piece, on the side you are rolling away from. Set the piece flat on the anvil so that the scribed line aligns with the edge of the anvil. Start tapping the edge of the piece so that it bends over the edge of the anvil. Make multiple passes, bending the edge a little at a time along the edge to be rolled. Once you've got a 90-degree bend, you can put the piece on edge in the vise, and keep tapping the bent edge till it's well past 90 degrees. Lacking a vise, set the piece on edge on top of your anvil.
Once your well past 90, you can set your piece flat on the anvil, with the bent part sticking up[insert your core wire now, if you're going to use one], and tap the roll the rest of the way down.
Adapt these procedures for curved rolls, and curved pieces, etc.

FYI, the first 90 degrees are easier, because you are stretching the metal. The last 90 are hard because on a curve, you must shrink the metal. Which can be a real bugger in SS.
