SCA Cloth armour from Sinric pattern ?

Post by Kristoffer »

I have just moved to a new apartment, and I havent had time to fix a workshop anywhere, and I need a new body armour for SCA combat as soon as possible.. I was thinking about making something similar to Sinrics padded jack..

Should I fill it with horsehair, or should I use cloth, and how much would I need to make it a good sca protection ?

I am unfamiliar with this particular pattern, however, I use a padded gambeson as my body armour in SCA combat.
My Padded gambeson offers plenty of protection from bruising and the like.
It has ribs stuffed after the sewing with 100% cotton flannel material. 25+ yards that make each rib about 1" Dia.
I used all natural materials so it breathes very well. The ribs also are angled down from the armholes, which, if I do not wear a shirt, provide a kind of primitive air conditioning. I was martialing at Gyldenholt Anniversary over the weekend and ended up putting on my gambeson because it is so much cooler than my tunics.
I hope that helps,

I would make it of many layers of linen, on the order of fifteen or so. For some reason that is a number that floats around in my head as being associated with Sinrics work. I will dig and see if I can find an actual reference, but dont hold your breath.
I fight in a gambeson made from three layers of cotton batting quilted between cotton twill, and worn under a mail hauberk. Works great right up to the point where you really get hit, then you have interesting looking bruises. The point is that any flexible armour doesnt do a whole lot for you if you are getting directly pounded. If you have enough skill and experience to slip most shots then the bare minimum might look attractive to you. Its how my knight works, as we get better he is putting on more armour. Image
