Finally! Here are some pics of my heavy fighting kit.

Many, many thanks to all my Archive buddies who kept me from building some awful mishmosh armor.

Kindly comments are welcome.

The goal was a Flemish ally of the English at the battle of Crecy, 1346. Very transitional, with splinted leather and some articulation here and there over a full gambeson and hauberk.

Wish list:
<UL>[*]A rattan-compatible scabbard and sword belt.
[*]Besegews instead of spades
[*]Sabatons
[*]Lose 20 years and 30 pounds...
[/list]

Nice! One question - Are you fighting SCA (I presume so, from the wish for a rattan scabbard), and if so, have the marshalls approved the use of a cervelliere under the great helm? Which kingdom?

Ok, so it's 2 questions... Image

Yes, it's SCA, in Atlantia. No, I haven't gotten it inspected yet. I can't imagine they will object to an extra layer of protection between two layers of foam, but you never know. The worst that could happen is that I'll have to wear a karate head protector instead...

Looks good. For the length of the hauberk it's really easy to fix. Basically just take a pair of bolt cutters and start sniping. You're probably wanting it to end just below where the split begins right? Anyway Dags on the bottom edge of the hauberk are very appropriate.

All the colors look great. Gives things a really finished look and makes it seem like everything belongs together.

Nice kit.

Right. I want the layers to look like this funeral brass:

Great! That may keep me from hammering tiny rivets to close up the split.

Yehudah,
Why wouldn't they pass a Cervelere under a great helm??

My setup is similar -- a padded cap, a Mizurka (maile-and-plates cap), some padding on the helm, then the helm.
So - don't worry! It passed.

Im doing a kit about 15-20 yrs later than yours:-)

couple of things I've found from trial and Error.

the Heraldic surcoat/jupon works great with eyelets on the sides and lacing down it. you can cinch the surcoat down over top of the layers and it helps hold it all together and keep the floppy down.

sometimes simple is better. the articulated knees and elbow, although good for our game, take quite a bit away from the overall period look of a early trans harness. As our Good pal Sir John D'Abernon shows us roundel elbows and wingless knees with heavy brass give the gawdy feel and maintain the overall appearance. you may want to forgo the pauldrons as well, I have a set for my Churburg arms and with the mail and early trans look they just didnt appear to fit well. I got the same style of riveted shirt and after dagging the bottom, cuting the sleevs down and begining adding brass to the edges. I must say it wieghs about half as much and looks 100% better. MARK IT FOUR OR MORE TIMES while in armor:_) then start snipping.IMo it looks best if cut along the bottom of the crotch line then adding about 11 rows to snip away for dagging. that gambison and leggings are AWESOME. WAY COOL doing both the greathelm and the eary bascinet cap. I cant fathom a marshal in atlantia who wouldnt understand wearing Two helms there:-)hehe Im sure Ned would agree, its just damn cool seeing others doing 1340-80

there are some elbows on here that are super simple and the pattern has been sent to galon for posting on the AA. these may be closer to your taste. im still looking at 3 months before completion of my kit and will be sure to get photos here to compair period with mods I am doing. IMO this period of transitional is very easy to do with minimal skill and a lot of determination. It very cool to see your efforts thanks for further inspiration!!!!

Norman, et. al.: No particular reason why it should fail. Just one of those things that's not common in the SCA, and I can see a marshall who doesn't know much about armor bouncing it on the "I haven't seen it before" principle. It ought to be ok, but you knwo what some marshalls are like.

& since you're going to have all that extra rivetted mail sitting around useless after you do your snipping, you'll be happy to send it to your dear old pal Loðurr, who desperately needs a drape for his helm!

Super kit! Lots of work and good research! I just love seeing a kit like that on the field.

As for your wish list, try these sources:

[*]A rattan-compatible scabbard and sword belt.

Templar Bob

[*]Besegews instead of spades

Samuel de Grac'e

[*]Sabatons

Mad Matt

[*]Lose 20 years and 30 pounds...

Dr. Who, then, if still necessary, Jenny Craig

JK, keep the 20 years, think of all the treachery you'd lose if you went back now! Bwahahahaha, die grasshopper!

Wow! Thanks for all the strokes. Applause from this tough audience means a lot to me.

Samuel, those are awesome elbows, but I don't know if I'd call them simple. I'm set up to do cloth and leather, and to cut, punch, and bend sheet metal, but compound curves will have to be subbed out. I've pretty much blown my armor budget for a while, but maybe I can write a letter to Santa Claus about getting some elbows like yours.

I agree that the spaulders, like the gauntlets, are a little out of place on this kit. Both are a concession to safety. Those of you who can tell 1340s from 1380s will just have to help me keep the secret, OK?

The only problem I can think of with the cervelliere-helm combo is if the helm has too much freedom of movement when it's on; i.e., if the helm can spin while your head stays still. That'd get the marshals nervous. Also, may I suggest that you might want the tails on your surcoat to be 6" shorter? You'll notice the difference fighting on your knees (unless you plan to yield for a good leg blow). Otherwise, that is a very nice looking kit.

ToweyB-
I'm having e-mail problems right now, but we should get together one of these days. I also live in Durham, and can help you get or make the round elbows that you are talking about.
