How is this knee attached?

I've tried to do something similar, and ended up with a nearly 2 inch gap when I flex my knee, or a leg brace. How is this knee attached to the leather on either side? There is no gap of leather showing (or on the effigies).

Well, as I see no visible signs of rivetting... it could be the leather is light weight and goes all the way top to bottom with the fancy knee attached seperately. (just a guess)

dont know about that one but I use a extended flap off the cuisse and rivet it to the top of the Cop. this only looks right with leather daggs riveted to the bottom as well....

Blind riviting technique, I'd guess.

Insert a rivit of the same metal as the poleyn from the inside into a hole that has been slightly countersunk on the outside. Whack very hard with a hammer to swell it, then peen a little around the edges to fill up the countersink area. Clip off extra rivit on the outside, and file/polish until you can't see any trace on the outside of the poleyn.

As far as the gap, let the leather of the cuisse (but not the reinforcing plates) extend down to near the middle of the knee. When you bend the knee it is still covered with at least heavy leather and will pass nearly all SCA inspections. (They're all subjective anyway)

Note that covering the top of the knees while kneeling doesn't seem to be an issue in period. I'd imagine that in the rare case a medieval fighter found himself in that predicament, the tops of his knees showing would be one of his very least concerns.
