Well, just my opinion (so probably not worth much
)...
The center grip I use on my buckler (the only shield I use) is nothing more than two stainless steel mixing bowls with a covering of leather (lightweight, just for looks).
The grip itself is nothing more thann a small chunk of rattan I had laying around the house after some weapon maintenance.
Attatching them to the shield was done by getting the hole cut in the shield for the boss's (bowls). The mixing bowls had a nice lip on them so inserting them into the hole let them sit there nicely. I then drilled two holes in the shield and two matching holes (one in each end) in the rattan grip. The grip ends where cut down enough on the ends so that when you attatch it to the shield, the ends would set down in the bowls about 1/2inch or so. The result was the bowls (boss) being held onto the shield by the grip which was bolted in.
I've used it now constantly for about 3 years with no maintenance what-so-ever. This even includes a nice long 'crack' in my grip that I keep thinking is going to break all the way, but no matter what punishment my baby takes, she bounces back for more...
Probably not very period, but it was quick and easy to do and has worked very well so far...
Hope that helps...
