Depending on your region, typicly no. the Lamellar is considered sufficiant rigid protection for your kidneys. As usual check with your local marshals for kingdom specific rules.

Mind you, a kidney belt is useful for other things, like suspending your legs.

Happy fighting,

I don't know about all the SCA realms, but in the middle that's equal w/ the standard, so long as the lamellar covers the kidney's & short ribs.

I have been using a 3/8 abs as kidney protection and in Atlantia I am questioning the viability of using it long term as I begin to explore using great sword and bastard sword. I am planning on reinforcing this area with double the thickness. You can't be too careful especially when people are using unpadded polearms such as at Pennsic. You don't want to become seriously injured if you are fighting with these forms that leave you unprotected in those areas, with a shield I have never had any concerns abou this level of protection.

I use aluminum lamellar over a gambeson like garment. Have no problem with passing inspection.

And no problem with it being not enough protection. It is going to be dependent on the elasticity of your plastic, and it's thickness.
