Strapping & padding a Salade

Post by William Frisbee »

I just picked up a very nice Lewis More Sallade.

Its a very nice piece, but I need to pad and strap it.

Anyone know how to do this historically?

This is a more English piece than German.

EM, I'm not certain I can answer you authoritatively on authentic. However, from what I've seen in pictures and images, some salade's have a row of "decorative" rivets around the ear level of the helm. People have conjectured that a padded arming cap was placed in there, sewn to leather, and the leather riveted to the helm.

Personally, I find it very easy to believe. In both my sallet (coventry) and my new salada, I have basically only installed the top skull padding, and then a chin strap. So far they have worked magnificantly.
