Mechanical properties of hot/cold rolled mild steel vs. stainless and spring tempered high carbon steel.

A friend asked me if it was possible to accurately calculate how much stronger spring steel was than mild or if it was possible to calculate what thickness of spring steel was equivalent to a given thickness of mild steel. Obviously it depends on the specific temper but the math is actually fairly simple. (I can post a summary here when finished)

I can get accurate numbers for yield strength of say 1045 treated and tempered to 600, 800, 1000 degrees etc. I can get yield strengths for 304 or 316 stainless just as easy (for comparison). What I am stumbling on is the yield strength of basic hot or cold rolled mild steel.

It’s not ASTM A36 structural steel (36,000psi). It’s not 1010 low carbon (55,000psi). It might be ASTM A607-7 (50,000psi) but I just don’t know!

What REALLY has me confused is we all know from pounding on it that Stainless is tougher than mild steel. Annealed 316 stainless has a yield strength of only 30,000psi which would make it SOFTER than mild steel. Mind you it can be work hardened into the 130,000 range which would make it harder than tempered 1045!

Does someone out there who works in or with the steel industry know what properties are commonly found in off-the-shelf hot or cold rolled mild steel? Also any info on armor grade stainless is also appreciated.

Most hot rolled steels that armourer's use *are* probably A36 and not a spec'd grade of "mild" steel.

basic hot roll and cold roll sheet is 1008/1010 a1011(a569)carbon steel.

That is what Ryerson calls refers to as it's basic sheet product.
