Jim's first helm ..pics

Post by Krag »

Here's Jim Grahm's first helm. He did a replica spangenhelm...not for sca, just for kicks. It's really nice to have someone come out, pick a period armour project and follow it through..even when it seemed like it might not quite come out like it was supposed to! It turned out really nice. It also happens to fit me rather nicely...hmmmm, I bet it would make a nice Christmas present! Here's some pics.

Hey, Jim! Is this the helm that you mentioned on the Regia list? Sweet. What did you use to line/pad it?

Not to bad. My congrats. For a first spangen it looks nice. Darken that galvy maile and it will look better. Oh well, just kidding. Image

Wow... that's really good for a first helm... I hope I do HALF that good for a first helm (and I'm buying a top from Ron Simmons)...

Krag - thanks for posting the pictures!

Aetheric - Yep, that's the one. The idea was to try and make something like the Coppergate helm (though no where even close to a replica). I haven't lined it yet - the white stuff inside of it is just a piece of an old mattress pad that I taped inside of it so I could wear it for Halloween ( ).

Dave - Give it a month or so and the maille will have lost its galvanized gleam Image

Krag's also failing to mention the fact that he walked me through every step in process and did a knock-up job of fixing the myriad of mistakes I made. He's a great guy to learn from!

Great work Jim, It turned out great. I just hope my first attempt turns out that well. Though I am sure with Krag's help it will. If, of course, he doesn't kill me first.

The pics aren't showing up right now because they are on Krag's page, which is on the GO network, which happens to be down at the moment. They will probably be up later on today again.
