Favorite hammer type/size for dishing?

Post by Jaeger »

Finally have a garage of my own (sort of) and I'm looking for suggestions on hammers (and any other personal favorite tools for plate, for that matter). Thanks!

For dishing? 8 lb shotput on a stick into a dishing form made from the bottom of an O2 welding bottle. Very fast and efficient.

2.5# steel bodied rawhide mallet and my 4" IronMonger ball stake if I need a bit more oomph!!!

Very little, if any, planishing work necessary.

Planishing? What's that? Image

I find that through dishing into the proper forms and with good face control on the hammer you hardly need to planish.

a rock, and a chunk of pipe!..
ok, maybe not... though a nicley cleaned up chunk of pipe can work wonders for some things.

for dishing i use a 3 lb minisledge with one face ground to match my dish, and my dish itself is actually rather deep i suspect, i just hacked the ever living $#!^ out of the end of a stump with a skillsaw, so it's about 1.5 to 2" deep(eyeballing) and about 5 or 6" across.

I use a 3# sledge with one end ground into a half sphere, and an ironwood mallet. Into a wooden form. Btw, tried calling you today, aint you ever home? Image Congrats on the new place.

Thanks for the input, everyone! And the congrats, of course. Image

I'll probably go for the ground 3 lb sledge. My father-in-law went out looking for a 2-pounder, and he got the hairy eyeball. Then again, I've heard a few other interesting ideas in the mean time that bear following up on.

Moving party? Once we get the boxes unpacked...
