Halloween Armour Pic

Post by Greyholt »

Hi everybody. This might be off-topic, but here's a pic of us in some of our armour on Halloween in Lahaina, Maui(the 'Mardi Gras' of the Pacific). Starting from the left, it's Me, Bigbeer, and then a few of our minions.

Not appearing in the photo are the police officers taking the picture! Actually, one of them is a friend of ours, and was giving us a tour of the command post, 4 stories up!
I think he was testing our stamina, as our armour weighs 60+ pounds each! I think Bigbeer was not amused, as is evidenced by the glare emanating from his eyeslit! Image

Well, I know we're not very scary (except for Bigbeer, perhaps), but what do you guys think of how we look?

Thanks...........Greyholt

Yeah, we got a lot of attention, especially from all those hapless fair maidens! Image

Our policeman friend said they could hear us tromping around from the command tower a block away! Pretty impressive, considering there was about 20,000 people in the street at the time!

Oh yeah, we had walked a few miles by this point, as can be seen by my wayward pauldron and how low my brayette is hanging.

The corrazina was bigbeer's doing... He'll probably post the details later.

Gotta go; we're in the middle of a lan party.

yea, wearing armour for long periods of armour for long periods of time tired you out all right.
i was wearing my kit's currnet encarnation from 8 am till about 10:30 pm on haloween.
god my shoulders were sore after that(japanese armour, a good chunk of weight hangs off the shoulders)
but you better believe the women love it.
and i;d have to say those are some beautifull kits.
i especially love bigbeers greaves and pauldrons.

Yep, that was us. We all live here and are getting the SCA ball rolling after a period of dormancy.
It's amazing how much more receptive people are when your armour looks decent! Image

Our goal is to get everyone looking good, and ideally, as period as possible. We're lucky, in that a bunch of us have the same 'vision', and that the group is small enough for us to have some influence. It certainly feels good to have everyone moving in the same direction.

Hopefully, it'll only get better!

Thanks.................Greyholt

p.s. By the way, we hold most of our fighter practices in Kihei, usually at night at Kalama Park, across from Foodland. Do your relatives know anyone that's interested?

Tybolt: Yeah, those pauldrons and greaves are really nice. He actually fights in that stuff, and you wouldn't believe how fast he can move! We did, however, have to do extensive modifications to make the stuff work properly (as the harness was not made by us). We're about to work on the breastplate to correct some problems. Plate, of course, has to fit properly, or it can be your worst enemy! (but I love it! Image)

Tim: Since Bigbeer is not responding, I'll describe what I know of it.

Ok, here we go... It's plastic! Image

Not too bad looking, though, huh? It was made as loaner armour, and is covered with upholstery material. See, it is possible to flirt with the Devil!
The guy who's wearing it had already spent $1000 on the rest of his harness (and had never even fought yet!), so we needed to cut some corners. It actually works very well, and you can't tell what's really under the cloth. It's some thick plastic, so the weight is up there; it was certainly not designed for a sports advantage! Image

Well, hope that helps..........Greyholt

Hello, sorry for taking so long to respond, but it's been a busy weekend. Image
As my associate Greyholt has already explained, that Corrazina style breast/ back was constructed from modest materials (barrel-plastic) as loaner armor that I could make within my condominium. It was cheap and easy to make, with a minimum of hammering on the heads of my downstairs neighbors. Image
I could, however, use the same patterns in
any material to recreate the same feel.
Essentially, it is a 7-piece breastplate (made this way because plastic IMHO does not form the proper shape (dishing) that metal could in fewer pieces. And If I was going to make this thing, I was at least going to make it look acceptable.) hard riveted with a fully articulated fauld. The back articulates in two pieces, and also has a fully articulated fauld.
I did not make it front closing (side instead) as is the norm, as I decided I wanted more rigidity across the sternum. However, in retrospect, I think I could have easily made it front closing with the same rigidity by adding a 'splice' piece down the center. (if that makes any sense.)
The articulations on the fauld are done with a combination of articulating rivets and leathers.(nylon webbing actually) And it works great!
I made the whole piece and then covered the entire thing (by contact-cementing it down, then riveting along the edges every 3/4in.) in a burgundy upholstery material that looked somewhat regal and like it would last through years of abuse. After that, I contact-cemented a natural colored canvas into the interior and sewed it up, all along the edges. (so that no-one would know of it's sisnister secret)
It has been in use for quite some time now and has shown very little (if any) signs of wear.
If you would like more detail, let me know and I'll snap a few pics to highlight what I've mentioned.

Big Brew over and out!!!

slap all of them for me, striving to get a period rig set up is never stupid, all it does is make you look good and attract the attention of those watching.

Greyholt what night/time do you have your fighter practice. I'll pass the info on to my sister and see if any of her friends are interested. Next time I'm on the island I'll have to bring my armour.
