Aluminum cross hilts...

Post by Aidan Cambel »

I was thinking - how can I make these? While the ones available for purchase are very nice, I am cheap. I have a bunch of aluminum laying around, so I was thinking....

make a design for a quillon, and cut about 4 pieces in that pattern. These would lay over the full length of the quillon --

---|--|---
---|--|--- (| | is the rattan)

Then on either side of the rattan, cut pieces to fill in the space. Total thickness would be about an 1 and 1/2 inch.

then put aligning holes all the way through. bolt them together using decorative boltheads/nuts, maybe j.b. weld them to the grooves to they don't back off, then grind the sides of the nut/bolthead so that it looks round, like a rivet.

whatcha think? workable?

Ive made some like that with Al and an outer layer of steel and they work pretty good. I dont think I would bother with bolts. I just got some long shovel handel rivets (like a regular dome head steel rivet but 1 1/2 in long) and riveted it together.
