My first attempt at plate armoring

Well, here it is, my first completed plate piece. I was trying for a pattern that would work for either heavy or rapier. So it's the world's most substantial rapier gorget. Of course, given that it's going to protect my wife's neck that's probably a plus. Image

Is the collar raised, welded, or riveted?

Riveted. The two halves of the collar are separate pieces that are riveted to the main plates in three places. This was one of my major learning experiences with the piece. When I fit things together, I forgot to add a little extra metal to accomodate the heads of the rivets on the bottom plate, which is why the front of the collar is a tad higher than the back.

Great job for a first effort.

May I suggest eliminating the 90 degree corner on the collar and maybe putting a little bit of a flare outward (away from the neck)on the top edge?. It looks a bit pointy for my taste to be next to the skin.

I second Rainald. It might be a good idea to roll the top, or to add leather at the top edge to protect your neck. It the heat of battle, I saw many self inflicted injuries by a piece of armor. Myself included. They usually are minors, but so close to the neck you better be cautious.

Whoops, sorry, bad camera angle. The top edges are rolled. Image Good idea on the leather though, I may try that.

very nice gorget!

the only thing I see is that the corners need to be rounded more.

May I ask what pattern you used to craft this? If it is one we do not have on the archive, can we get?

Thanks

Nice job.
I also recommend rounding off those corners.
