Stuck on Bazuband Design
I am working on making a pair of Leather Bazubands for myself. Trust me if I was not poor I would buy Uiellag's in a heartbeat but I am to poor. I have gotten all the materials together to make a pair of Leather Greaves and Bazubands. I have seen many great pattern ideas here and just finished making my pattern for the greaves with a metal knee cop attached to it. I plan on doing the Rabbit Glue Gesso hardening and dishing if all goes well in gathering the tools and supplies. I began to start making the Bazubands pattern and have seen many great articles on the design of them. I have both supplies to be able to rivet or sew the Bazubands together. Since I want to make them sturdy I was going to rivet the elbow part. I have been working on a few prototypes trying to make my own as well as using similar ideas I have seen on here. So far I am not too happy with the outcome of the elbow part with the patterns. They look plain funky or they just do not cover the elbow properly. I am stumped and frustrated as well as I am going to have to get some more old folders since I ran out. Any direction, help or advice would be most grateful....

Riviting leather does not mean its stronger, look as shoes, they are sewn.
My bazuband pattern works well, just punch and sew the seam.
Sewing will distribute stress evenly along the seam. us a heavy shoe thread in a color matching your dye and you wont even notice it much from a few ft away.
Make the hinged portion of thee vambrace part of the main pattern
Pretty straight forward

These are a lot like WMA's bazuband pattern. A LOT like it. Thanks Adam, I appreciate the help there. They arent too hard to make, just stitch up the elbow seam before you dish the elbow. That makes it nice and even.
If you have questions, email me I'll try and help if I can.

Stitching can work very well. That is how I made my original pattern for over 4 years. The reason I changed the pattern, (as did GAA), was because in those 4 years we had 2 pair of bauzubands come back to us. The leather around the seem had torn, making the elbow fail. The other reason is that riveting takes a lot less time than sewing.
To keep the leather from tearing, place the sewing holes about 1/4" back fro the edge of the leather. The bauzuband pattern posted on the pattern archive works very well. I would suggest trying that.

Alright.. I was thinking of using that pattern on the Archive and then sewing up the elbow.. Doing the sewing 1/4 inch away from the edge. Dishing the elbow for a good fit. Then taking another strip of leather on top of the seam that goes the length of the Bazubnad to reinforce the elbow.. Would that look and be pretty sturdy on top of using the Rabbit Glue for hardening. Thanks for all the good direction..
