The Armour Archive

Greetings all!

I have been a member of the ARS for about a week now and I can't speak enough about it. As many of you know, I am gaining interest in authentic cuir bouilli armours, (hardened leather). Just two days ago, I enetered a request for aid in researching this elusive topic and I have already recieved several responses.

All of these responses have been to information that I didn't already have through my own research.

This is definately a worth while endeavor to find remarkable research assistance. As the Society grows, and more armourers contribute to the information available it will only get better.

It's certainly a wonderful resource! I highly reccomend anyone interested in historical armor join. Not only are discussions quite well-laced with detail and links, but the information is only getting better! I myself plan on documenting what suits of armor I can during museum trips. I have a large number of pictures of a suit from the Milwaukee Art Museum and once I find the writeup I did on the armor, I'll make a page and post the link on the ARS forums.

It also has some interesting repairs on it. Several holes are filled in and virtually unnoticable unless magnified.

Mike, just one little thing: any chance these could be blind rivets, ground flush with the metal? These are common on the brows of helms where the suspension is riveted in, but rivet heads over the brow are unappealing.

Interesting thought, Ralph. I havn't had any experience with those on armor west of China.

It's very possible, but there are so many rivets on that piece that I'm unsure if they'd need more. The rivets for the tassets are only about an inch from there anyway.

Do you think they'd let me check the inside of the suit to find out? No? Didn't think so.

Once I get all the pictures up we can get someone who knows what they're doing to look at it. I did learn something today, though. Thanks, Ralph!

That's my hairy arms holding a helmet in the armoury in Delft, the Netherlands. The curator wasn't 100 % sure whether this was an original, but from all I can tell it is, or it's a very good copy with all the features an original has. There are more pics in that directory BTW.
