Apprentice Armoury/ A.B. Hammer Roman Greaves

Higher res pictures are avaliable upon request. Sorry I didn't get all dressed up. Still need to draw on the "Owen Toes" and put some meat back on the legs (toothpicks). 7 months in IRAQ does wierd things to your body

A.B. and Dragos THANKS!!!! Feel free to use the pictures OR let me know if you want different shots of them.

Hey Cingetorix!

Those look great! Being someone interested in the Romans (not as much as many, of course:p) could I ask you what those are based on? I've heard of evidence for the articulated knees in later Roman examples, but I don't think I've happened across a look-see of what they really are like. What's the approximate period of use for the articulated ones?

Thanks for sharing!

Well Greg the look I am eventually going for is is similar to a 50 bc Equites/ Roman Cav. In reality I probobly would not have worn the greaves unless I was very wealthy, but I fight in the SCA sooooo.. I must make adjustments.
As far as having access to primary sources to document their proper use and look in my chosen period, I have limited time and resources with which to work with. (location, wife and kids, employment) My resources are limited to the internet(google is my friend) and Osprey books that I get through amazon, so any answer I could offer would be inadequate. I won't try to BS anybody.
Perhaps one of the other fellas in here can answer your question. I'm just here to learn and share what little I learn. I thought posting the pics might help some other hapless boneheads, like me, that have never worked with leather or steel.

I guess I have a different Idea. For mine I am going to rivet my steel knee cop to the greave itself therefore making it one solid piece with padding and strapping included of course. I am thinking I will only need one but I might go for two just in case but I think one heavy duty copper rivet will do the trick.

Still need to draw on the "Owen Toes"

Wow, I'm world-famous on the Archive!

Good looking greaves; I chuckled because the first thing I thought was, "Those are cavalry greaves, then later on you said that's what you were going for! How well do the cover the knee when you bend?

Ronin--- I had pondered directly riveting the hidden cop into the pretty one but I change my mind for just that reason. They are to pretty to mark up.

Owen--- Seeing your kit for the first time over a year ago showed me how to achieve the look I wanted, and I don't claim ideas for my own if I got them from somewhere else. So when the local 11 cent normans ask where I got my ideas, you, the archive, and the Orkneys are it. Just gotta get off my butt and get to work on the hamatta next.

As for the flex on the knees, they stay in place good. The hidden cop doesn't move out of position at all, so the greaves could fly off and I would technically still be legal.

Gotta go set the tree up, Ya'll have a merry Christmas/ Yule

Hey Cingetorix and others,

Merry Christmas Eve!

I don't mind you not using a direct source for the look... I tend to use Osprey's artistic license too much for my things as well! Mcbride's work influences me, especially! :D They look neat. The only greaves I've got are my Mycenaean ones, which aren't too comfortable... :\ The idea of having a nice set for use seems like a prosperous one, even though I'm too young for SCA (by a couple of years) my friends and I fight armourless with wooden and pvc weapons... It hurts, sometimes..! Having something to guard the shins is always a plus!

Cheers!
