New japanese armour.

Post by Ujiyori »

At the suggestion of a few ;D I am posting this pic of my armour. I just finished it a few weeks ago.

This is my first japanese kit and I can see a few things that I will need to change on my 2nd kit that I am planning. I built every piece of this kit and had the zunari powder coated black. Definitely durable and nice looking. Plastic pieces were added to the helmet to prevent thrust from getting in. Next one will have a modification to combat this. It was a great learning experience overall. I am planning another suit already ;D My wife will kill me when I tell her that. The next suit I want to make out of kozane scales and take my time with. This one was the work of about 6 months time spread out between work, school, and home life.

Info on kit:
Made of 3/16" ABS black plastic
3/8" poly lacing from laces-for-less.com
Cotton duck cloth for foundation of kote, suneate, and haidate
14 ga steel zunari kabuto powder coated black with plastic hineno shikoro. Has removable bar grill so that I can make a menpo for it in the future.
Real bear fur kegutsu
Hidden knees and elbow cops
Tsubo suneate
Iyo haidate
Simple vambraces until I can finish a proper kote
Mogami Sode laced in sugake style
Modified gorget to look like nodawa laced in kebiki style
Ni-mai-do laced in sugake style

Just need a pair of black clamshell gauntlets and I am all set.

See you on the field,

Looks great
Do you have any pics from other angle / close ups?

On thing i would work on tweaking. I fight in an open faced style men armor as well, but I would suggest something more subdued for a grill if you go this rout. It helps the eye look over it more..... so it sees the overall style first and then notices the grill as a distant second. When i looked to your kabuto I "saw" the grill first and then much later saw the zunari. If you like i can find a pic ofme that shows the solution i used for this years ago, based on a design Kuji dono made. PM me if your interested in me sending it.

Of course modified menpos, and somen are other solutions as well. And they are even interchangable. :)

Hehehe, indeed it is. You can really only tell when you are within 5 ft of it or so. Mostly because you can see the edges and realize it is black all the way through.

Thanks for the compliments!

I'll see if I can get some more pictures of the kit soon. The ones I had taken turned out rather dark. Thanks again!
