That's the lathe I will be getting form my bro.
South bend precision lathe
9-in. swing bench lathe with adjustable horizontal motor drive
Bed length 3.5
Is it good, assuming good condition of course?

Is the price right?
There used to be a Brit website where you could get all the basic info you could want on lathes, but I couldn't find the bookmark.
Does it do screws/threads? Does it have tooling? Will your brother show you how to use it?
I'm guessing this lathe is from the 50/60's. If in good shape, it is still a good tool.

Yes it does sound like a flat belt driven standerd lathe of the 40's-50's
If the legs are attatched and it looks like a singer sewing machine it is a good ol' cast iron machine. South Bend = good brand made in the USA.
Some tune up and way adjustments can bring it back on line in no time.
Does it have the 3 jaw chuck and chuck key?
Does it have the tool holder?
Does it run?
How Much?
A price is worth the amount of the need.

Thanks for the links Garreth.
As for the price, well free is pretty good.

It will be more a loan type thing. He can't show me how to use it cause he dont know.
I will be the one doing the experimenting and showing him.
Yes Hal, it has a 3and a 4 jaw chuck. I will post pics of when I get it next week.
Thanks all.
