Do any armourers in the central Texas area hold open workshop days? I am looking to build a new kit when i get back from Iraq in a few months and was hopeing I could line something up ahead of time. I am looking to build a churburg style kit. Legs, arms, articulated body, and if possible a bascinet with exchangable bargrill and full face.

All weekends I'm in town . You're about 1.5-2 hrs from me...pending traffic and how you drive. We have crash space for a full weekend of armouring.

Hey Krag! I dint know you where on this list, long time no see. Any way,We got a REAL nice core group of guys here in Emarald keep going now. Where having our build days on saterdays at Kanes house. So far we got 3 of our guys with complete kits and the rst with some nice kits in the works. Not to mintion that old set of plates you sent up with Thomas. Thats looking good too!

I've been here since the old Blue days. I could probably swing a waco trip one weekend. Y'all are welcome to come down to my shop as well.

I went up to Krag's this past weekend and had a great time, got me some splints for my left vambrace done, quenched and tempered.....now just need to do the right vambrace. Krag is a great guy and I had a blast, cann't wait to do it again.

Yeah, Krag has some cool toys. I'd like to publicly thank him for his help last weekend, and showing us the mysteries of heat treating.
As for your request, I've made a few Churburg #13s, and I fight in one. Look me up when you get home and I can at least get you some patterns and help cut them out.

Thanks for all the replies. Krag, what kind of time frame would a Bascinet with brass trim be? Could it be done in a weekend? I'll email you with more details as I am able.

Depends on what you start with, how good you are at pounding metal and to what quality of appearance you want. For something that looks really nice, 20-30 man-hours is not unreasonable.


Starting with flat sheet, I can't do it in a weekend. For bascinets, it takes me at least a few hours to pound out the halves and get them smooth/even. Another hour to tweak the sections so the halves mate up perfect. Some more time to do the final planishing, then go back and make sure they still mate up. Add in welding, grinding polishing/surfacing. Rewelding because Krag hasn't welded in a while and fucked your helm up with the first pass... . Then fit the skirting, adding in any compound curves that need to be there. Also, the fact tht others are using the same equipment, and your arms/hands will not want you to do this non-stop draws it out a bit as well. You can get a majority of it done, though, if that is all you are working on.

I use pre-formed helm-halves (Ron Simmons...or whoever has it now) and this helps considerably. I still can't do it in a weekend. I like to work slow, but steady and nit-pick the entire time.

Ok, sounds reasonable. As I said I am hopeing to do a whole new kit over time. If I can get it up and ready in a few months, say 4-6 I would be pretty happy.

How much reshaping do you do to the premade halves?
