Where to get 14th century buckles?

Post by gargoyle »

My splinted arms are nearing completion. Anybody have links or sites that sell 14th century buckles?

I understand that the sale of archeological finds like buckles has been stamped on pretty hard lately. You might need to find a crooked museum somewhere to ship you some. There are also a few reputable auction places...but you will be collecting for a long time to get a matched set of buckles dug up.

Are you sure you want to go with real 14thC buckles? It could get very expensive.

Why not try modern reproductions instead?

Since we are rounding out the list - Tom Justus does a lot of buckles as well. He has a whole assortment of copies made from originals.

He doesn't show lots of them (ok, any of them), but if you drop him a note he will probably respond. The last time I was there he seemed to have a bunch lying around.....

Oh - on the originals......

I don't think I would try to get a whole matched set because it would take a long time and get expensve, but they are relatively easy to get. As I understand it, there are regulations, but they are not as restrictive as they might seem on first glance. I know several people with some pretty extensive collections of medieval LMS, and several people who have enough that they sell on a regular basis including Talbot.

I don't have very many myself (only a couple of hundred pieces I think....).
