I've recently started another full suit order and have decided to post pics as it progresses. The owner asked that I don't post his name, so don't ask If you have questions about how things are being done I'll try and answer. The breast and back are basically where I have begun on this. Here is a profile drawing of the breast and back, the back on the actual piece being made was modified from the drawings at the request of the customer.

While the piece being made has been altered slightly from the sketches you still get an idea of the style.

And here we now have some metal that's been smacked a few times by a hammer. I'll be posting additional pictures over the next two months or so of the rest of the items that will be going with this suit, from head to toe. Enjoy

Has anyone else noticed that Mr. A-Bob now has now put together several of these step by step photo series? Would it be too much to hope that we are seeing the beginnings of a how to book? The title could be something like "Advanced Armoring Techniques". Think about it, you know you are tempted. . .

I think there should be a video of you raising a hat out of an iron ingot!

Looking very promising! Was the body profile a trace of the customer, or just a generic sketch based on the customer's dimensions?

Brian, I may have an iron ingot going some time soon. Nothing definite yet, but I'm trying to hunt down the right people at a reconstructed 13th century blast furnace, and get permission to play with their finery and some of the pigiron they made in previous runs.

Then we can talk video!

Ok, well not a whole lot to look at this time. I worked on hinges yesterday, there are about 16 of them that had to be made, here is a pic of a few of the ones I built yesterday, These will be going on the breastplate and fauld


James, this suit will be all mild.

Lorenzo, I actually shoot photos of the progress of almost every item I make so the customers can see how things are going and if there is something that is dreadfully wrong do to a missunderstanding or misscomunication I know before the item is finished. I had thought book at one point, but I don't know that it would be a how to book.
How much interest would there be in a video of a hat being made from a large chunk of wrought iron/steel and then raised into a hat? This is already a planned project, but knowing a video would be wanted of it as well would be good to know now so as to plan it. Would people be open to paying 20-25$ for a copy? Getting it proffesionally shot and put on a dvd will run a few bucks so there would have to be interest in paying for it, not just getting a free copy

Let's see, I think the fauld will be getting worked on today, or perhaps some tweaking and rolling of the neck and arm openings. We'll see

I was thinking about the the possible helm raising video last night. If the video could include more than just raising the bowl that would be outstanding! Additional bits could include a visor, a forehead reinforcement piece, or a raised comb depending on what helm is selected. Cheek pieces for an armet or roman helm would also be quite interesting. Not that a kettle helm wouldn't be nice but a more complex 15th or 16th century piece would really "kick it up a notch", or perhaps several notches!

I like the look of your cuirass and start of the lames for the tassets. What thickness steel are you using?

The suit is being constructed out of a variety of gauges depending on the part, ranging from 14-20 for starting material. I definatley do take orders if you have a project your interested in email me with the specifics of what your wanting. As far as the video, to get a professional for just a couple of days of shooting and a couple days of editing it'll cost more than what I charge for a good helmet, so having a good cameraman hang around with lights and equipment for the making of a complex helmet would run a bit high. I guess that is an option, but not one I'm looking at right now
