Crusader armour questions

I was looking over my Osprey "The Crusades" before I sell it to a forum member, and I had some questions regarding some of the armour represented in the color plates.

This particular title is illustrated by Richard Hook, not Angus McBride.

1st off, plate B shows a Gascon crossbowman, armoured in a leather buff coat...I was always under the assumption buff coats came around MUCH later, like 17th century. No other details are given as to how it was constructed, thickness, etc.

Plate F shows a German infantry sergeant wearing a hauberk and what amounts to a mail ski mask, with seperate eyeholes trimmed in leather. I cant tell if its integral to the hauberk or seperate. It just looks wierd...the author cites the Reliquary of St Haddin, the Book of Dialogues of St Gregory, and Eneide (whatever the hell that is!).

Plate I shows a Trabzon archer, 13th century, shooting his composite bow with a rather large round shield strapped to his wrist/forearm. NICE! See!!! My D&D elven ranger can still use a shield while shooting and gain the AC benefit from it!!! I KNEW IT! :D

Plates J and K show knee protection that looks like a shield boss attached to a quilted ACE knee bandage (on plate J) and another on K looks like shield boss sized rosettes on the knee part of the chausses (which are in turn worn under gutter greaves). Another figure on K has cuirboulli leg harness (greaves/poleyns/cuisees) over his chauses, but also appears to have (be gentle here please, I use this for want of a better term) studded leather sabatons on OVER his mail sabatons.

Comments anyone?
