shield boss pic

ok here is my boss, im not sure if i got it done in time for the contest or not.
its hard to make out the etching, mostly because of the pic, but my solution was pretty weak by the time i did the rim.
the cross cut outs arebecause my brittanic personna would likely display his christianity somewhere on his person.
the boss is lined with felt to make it more comfy and to better show the cut-outs
boss is 14 ga, brass is 14 in the center and 16 on the edge
the boss will be fixed to the shield via rosettes like in the center of the boss

And now for the multitude of questions.
Does the brass on the flange wrap around to the back or is it just attached to the front?
What did you use as an etchant?
What did you use as a resist?
Where the heck do you get those rosettes?
That's it for now but I'll probably think of more.

thanks for the compliment Janos, im working on your visor as i worked on the boss, sorta experimenting on the boss with things i will try on your gear, and yes you can get one from me, a russian prayer in the correct alphabet would be cool around the rim.
Matt, the brass rim does not fold over, sure would be cool if it did, it just sits on the boss's flaired rim.
i made the rosette,
the solution is circut board etching solution and the resist is a sharpie marker.
im thinking about moving on to a better resist and stronger solution.
oh and Janos i made this for combat, i am going to remake it from 14 ga stainless in an attempt the add strength to the cross cut outs

ooo... that would be cool Dmitriy. My skills at Russian are similar to mine in Esperanto..... non-existant.
Its great to see these kinds of details going into a field kit. Even some of the best work out there in SCAdian kits seem to lack any of the details (like enscribed prayers and the like) that make the kits look generic. This is going to flesh out your kit nicely Chu.

id like that alot dimirty, id love to be able to put it in that cool letter style as well, if you could come up with one that would be great, or at least point me to one, while ive got the rus's attention, Janos i recieved a russian gift product catalog, in it they had hand painted rus mini figures, 80.00 for a set of 10, htats the cheapest ive seen for hand painted russian minis.
these guys have little lamelar and maille shirts, cool teardrop shields and pointed helms, if this intrests you let me know and ill mail you the info, i think i need them for my self, then ill need some teutonic knights for some table top reinactment, maybe ill fight them on a bowl of frozen water

Very nice work indeed!
I am always a sucker for brasswork.
I would question the cutouts a little. Are they based on period example?
I have honestly never seen such and if they existed it gives me a couple of ideas. The only problem is that I see it as compromising the strength of the dome.
Would it have been more practical to introduce the crosses in either brasswork, riveted on steel, or as raised elements of the original dome?
Perhaps even as chiseled and chased?
As to etching. I also use a circuit board etcher...I am no longer happy with it. I am not impressed by the longevity of the solution (read: I have had the stuff screw up a couple of deadlines in the past).
I would hesitate to go for too strong a solution becasue it starts to undercut the resist and then things get really ugly really quickly.
Do you heat your etching solution (and keep it warm with a waterbed heating unit)?
For a resist I have taken to cheating dreadfully and now apply a layer of good quality duct-tape (It does not feature on finished Riverforge armour....it gets it out of its system in the workshop).
I cover the dry brass or copper with duct-tape and then draw my design onto it. Using a scribing tol with a sharp point I cut through the duct-tape and peel it away.
I have yet to have a problem with this method.
Using paint and wax crayons for a resist has not proved freindly to me...
I would love to swap ideas on etching at some time....as I have sort of stopped doing it until we move to the new workshop.

nope, no period examples of this type of cut out, and im sure there is a strength compramise but ill live with it, my original intent was to put a drilled and filed stainless boss over a brass boss so that the cut outs would show as brass relief in the steel but i was not sure how long i had so i scrapped the idea when i was looking at a pappenhiemer rapier with a felt behind the piercings, i did dish a small piece of brass and put it behind the cross, it looked cool but the red felt showed up better.
ad for a stronger solution i would prob swith to a matching resist.

Does a bear wear a funny hat? Of course I'd be interested =} Christmas is 'acommin' and the wife needs more gift ideas
Might just have to get some teutons as well. Gotta have somebody to kill when yer playin war
You should have an email from me shortly concerning those bazubands (both past and present) as soon as I get my new laptop configured correctly. After playing with this new one I can hardly even fire up the old one. PIII 800 and 512 ram does that to ya.

Oh yeah baby! Really nice!
I saw the new bazubands as well and I am extremely interested. I am also thinking that matching leather and brass (to the legs) would go magnificently on the sheild with a similar boss (no prayer on mine please).
