Wedding Demo Pics

Post by Greyholt »

Hi.
Just got some pictures back from a wedding demo we did a while ago. Please forgive the random basket hilt and other discrepancies! Image

I'm the guy in the black and Bigbeer is the muscle-bound bastard next to me!

Here, Bigbeer prepares to destroy some poor fool:

Well, there you go... Sorry for the black& white; the photographer was being artsy-fartsy...

The stuff on Bigbeer looks like it came from Illusion Armory. Scott makes great looking stuff.

Hi, everybody.

Yep, we're SCA and we're trying bit by bit to get better looking (our chances are better by wearing helms! Image). Also, we're really trying to up the standard and get more period-looking. It's kinda cool that we have the whole island (Maui) to ourselves, so it's easier to 'coerce' the newbies to look good (whether they like it or not! Image).

Yeah, most of Bigbeer's harness was made by Illusion. It literally covers him head to toe, but we're in the process of modifying the breastplate, so he's wearing a corrazina in these shots. The pauldrons and arms also needed some tweaking to work properly, due to Bigbeer's unusual physique (he's a bodybuilder). Luckily, we're both armourers, so it wasn't too difficult.

Scott Martin (Illusion) makes some beautiful stuff. The gothic legs are the best of their kind I've ever seen in the SCA. I did modify the pauldrons by replacing the front rivets with leathers to increase mobility. We really love full pauldrons, but can't stand any loss of movement. So, I guess I've become a perfectionist when it comes to those. (Please ignore the guy with the spear's arm harness- we're working on it!)

The spearman's legs, as well as the klappvisier and that arm harness was made by Eagle's Talon; Bryan Britt makes some really nice stuff.

It'll be really neat when we're done with everybody's kits (like that'll ever happen!). We'll have a range of harnesses spanning from Vikings to Landesknechts (With no basket hilts and almost no bargrills!). Image

Vincent, actually, his sallet is also from Illusion. It seems like Eagle's Talon makes a a nice one too. It's sooo hard to find armourers who make decent sallets; I don't understand why...

Hey, those photos look vaguely familiar! Image

Greyholt:
Here, Bigbeer prepares to destroy some poor fool:

Cologino Reciputo (the noble lord I had the pleasure of doing battle with) is no push-over, and I consider myself lucky to enjoy his growth as a fighter. I gotta save these pics because I may need proof in the future that I once got a kill in.
But he's still a fool. Image

Sasha:
I will try to get some detail pics of the pauldrons at this weekends fighter practice.

Vincent:
The Sallet is made by Illusion. Eagle Talon also makes one of similar style that I am certain would be of outstanding quality.
I'll try to convince someone to take some digital pics at this weekend's fighter practice.

Thanks for all the kind words. There is still much to do, but I believe we are moving in the right direction.

Brew out!!!

I too think you guys look great. What are you using for shield edging? Hose is the standard issue here, but it looks crappy, and it's impossible to use your shield to glance spear-thrusts with a giant pizza-crust around the edge. Whatever you have there is nice and low-profile, and improves the look of the shields greatly.

Brodir, you should see that shield now!
The edging is some plastic u-channel stuff that one of our friends got. I'm trying to find more of it. The stuff fits perfectly over the aluminum edge.

Bigbeer then covered the entire face of the shield with black 4 oz. leather, rolling it over the edge, and riveting it on, completely covering the edging and bringing the thickness up to SCA spec. It looks gorgeous! All sleek and smooth. He then put his device (made from one of those stickers- I forget his name Image- on the archive made). It's absolutely beautiful, and now the weight is up a little more realistically.

We'll try to take some pics at practice tomorrow so you can see what I'm talking about.

I really didn't notice until you brought that up. Um, is there something you'd like to tell us?... Image

Actually, I think it might have something to do with the fact that the photographer was a young female! Image... there seems to be an inordinate amount of butt-shots, come to think of it!

Anyway, I'll try to post some other pics- or at least give you links to some. Hey, do you have the address for the Western Seas bb? A lot of us keep in touch through it and post pics, etc. On a similar vein, we're going to do a St. Paddy's day demo at an Irish Pub that recently opened up over here, so we should have some good pics in a couple of weeks. We're sincerely hoping to coax some free Guinness out of them! Image!

Well, nice chatting with you....

Well, THAT was a long weekend! (what did you expect when St. Paddy's day is involved!?!)

Anyway, we scrounged up some new pics at the last practice for you inquisitive types...

Brodir, here's a pretty bad pic of the completed shield. Notice it is now covered in leather (glued to the face and riveted all around), but as a consequence, the edge has become larger (keeping the Marshalls at bay). It really isn't as bulbous as it seems in the pic... It's certainly far superior to anything I've seen yet!

As I type this, he's working on a new heater in the same fashion. Should be pretty cool!...

Sasha, here are some better pics of the pauldrons, as we promised (although a bit late Image)...

This is the outside, as it were....

This is the inside...

Notice the butcher job we did to the articulations. We replaced the solid rivets with 'leathers' (nylon webbing- leather rots real quick over here), to give it better range of movement, as is evidenced by...

This:

This makes a huge difference in mobility. The gap in the back lames is there because the pauldron was not designed for this extreme range. I modified this to be similar to the gothic harness on pg. 127 of AAOMK. Several pics of this harness from different angles (and sources) gave me insight into how this stuff is supposed to work. I think the lack of proper articulation in typical SCA pauldrons is why a lot of people are so opposed to wearing them.
As these are, with such crude modifications, the range of motion is almost completely unhindered...

Anyway, hope this helps...

Thanks for the extra shield pics Greyholt. I'm last-minute cobbling together a heater tonite for a tournament on Saturday, and I'll try to do something similar with the edging.

thanks for the pics! I've always had trouble with the top lame staying in place, but the rest of the pauldron sliding around becuase of the leather articulation. I guess it would make sence to use a combination of hard and leather articulation.
