My new armour

Post by Stoffel »

well, it was mine, its being sold now. I'm either going for spring steel or stainless. Probably stainless because I am getting very sick of cleaning rust every day. Its not worth it to use mild when I dont have a back yard, I have a deck which sits over the gulf of mexico. Either way, I have this harness complete as much as I plan on doing on it. The description is on the ebay page, so I'm not going to bother typing it out again. All in all, I am very satisfied with what I did with it, I'm deffinatly seeing lots of improovement from that first suit of gothic plate that I tried to make over last summer, that got the comment from Gundo of "yuck". This is something I can actually be proud of for the time being. Questions and comments are very welcome. Image

Actually I didnt planish that much on it. Most of the shaping was done with a rawhide mallet or over leather covered forms. I mostly had to bough the pieces to get any large dents out of them. I forgot to take the two dents out of the front of the breast plate before I took the pictures though, stupid great swords. Although you cant see it in the pictures, the greatest problem with the finishing is that there are hammer marks on the rolled edges. All of my sanding was done by hand. My advice for making something like this, is to try to make something as complicated as you think you can, look at all the faults in it, and continue to do the same until you learn how. Even though everyone told me to start with simple spaulders or elbows, I went straight to trying ot make sull plate. Agreed, it wasnt very pretty at all, but I learned a great deal from it. Heres a link to the first set of plate I tried to make:

(copy, paste, probably add a ? to the end of the link)
cough, gag, wheeze, man that stuff was pityfull...

Thanks for saying that! I have only pounded a few pieces out and have been more pleased with the results with each piece. I started off with spaulders but found that I really wanted to work on my breastplate.

I figure I'm starting too high, but it's what I'm passionate about working on. It looks pretty rough, but I am excited about it.

Btw, I like the pauldrons in your first plate. Where did you get that pattern?

The pauldrons on the first plate where from the Horsemans Pauldrons from the archive. I just modified them a bit and attached spaulders for the upper arms. I've found that if you dish the large part of the pauldron more, then you dont need the upper plate of the spaulder, and can just put lames coming down instead, much more period.

Thanks! I am going to make several different types to see what works best with my breastplate. My breastplate isn't *any* period but I used the peascod pattern from the archive (ageofarmour I believe)

Rev., that's because big boys are smart enough to just throw on a coat of plates. NOBODY wants to dish out a breastplate to fit big guys like us. Besides, they only make sheets of steel so big, ya know Image

PoD, you are so depressingly right. Speaking as one who is pear shaped, yet lusts after the silhouette of the corrazina.... Sigh. I may just kill myself.
