Early 16th century helm

Post by Jon Marshal »

What kind of small cap helm would be period to the early 16th century europe? I see armets, barbutes, and sallets. Is there anything small that just covers the skull that one would could wear with armour? I don't want to put a spangen helm with the rest of my kit.
Thanks

Arming cap, steel head cover, that went on under the great helm. A padded steel hat, scull fitting round thing, under or over the chain mail coif.

Do not take my word for it I am not historical.

Study and read.

May I suggest you browse through the art section in your local library? I looked through my collection of pictures by Albrecht Du"rer, who is an exact contemporary, but no luck in what you wanted. You might also try Breughel, or others from the same general period. Pictures in art books, particularly of Christ's Passion, often have pictures of common soldiery, who would be the ones to wear such a helmet.

Good luck with it.

Looking at the contemporary art is always good. I know that I have seen woodcuts from this period where they were wearing simple skull caps of steel. I also know that they were making very cheap salets that were little more than a cap - with a little teeny tail. They were very plain.

They also made some very early burgonets....

I actually do hope to have a close helm for jousting, that Gundobad is making, but for choreographed fighting on foot I am looking for something a little lighter and open faced. From the good suggestions I have received, I am leaning now towards a small open faced sallet, would that be a celata? perhaps. Or maybe a coif but I don't like how they look, just my personal taste. I have been folowing the construction of the helm from Sinrics pattern and it looks great.
Thank You
