In the Osprey Men at Arms series, #333 Armies of Medieval Russia 750-1250 plate A; figure 3 is shown with a type of early spaulder. the figure is listed as being an Eastern Magyar Cavalryman from the 9th Century. They list the Arm defences as being from Borisov'skij, location unknown and the armour as being from Cir-Jurt.

A similar shoulder defence can be found on plate D where figure 2 is listed as a Boyar nobleman form the 11th-12th centuries. They list the gear as being based upon armour fragments from Novgorod.

Does anyone know more about this form of "spaulder" (for lack of a better) word. If I could find more acceptable documentation I would like to include it into my kit.

The Khazars were in their prime from about 700-1000, so it should fit in with what you want to do.
