My New Helm....Critique

Greetings,

I recived my new helm from Krag today....and it is totally awsome.

This helm was a custom peice, with original sketches done by me and Krag taking it from the drawing board to completion. And let me tell you He did an excellent job of staying with the original design.

This helm was originally to be a celtic/viking slat back design with brass trim and a custom grille. What I got was far and beyond what I had ordered. Krag says it is because he missed a few completition dates so he added more stuff to the helm to compensate. But I think this helm was a nice helm to try some stuff he had wanted to try on helms before and this was a perfect opportunity to do so. This "additions" to my helm were PERFECT. The final result is a totally unique and stunning helm, that when worn on the list field will get me noticed extremely fast. ( I am not sure if that is a good thing or not LOL)

On to the Critique:

This helm is made or 14ga top panels with Brass bands. The cheeks and slots are 16ga Mild steel and there is celtic knotwork re-inforcements on slats. The Grille is blacken and designed in such a way that I will be able to see without enterference. The Nasal and Brows on the face are Pattern Welded steel. They are very thick and should stand up to SCA punishment well.

The first slats on each side behind the cheeks are 16ga mild steel with a brass overlay that was etched in a Celtic bull design, which is part of my arms.

On the inside of the helm all the welds from the cheeks and slas to the panels are clean and slag free. Krag used an ubundance or Rivets on this helm which not only adds to the beauty but the sturdiness.

The grille has no gapes in it that would even come close to having list feild problems. And it is made of 1/4 inch rod stock. All the welds on the Grille have been ground flat and the front of the grille was ground to a low flat profile as well. It was then Blackened so as not to seem gawdy against the rest of the helm.

The Lines on this helm are very clean a sleek. And Krag did an excellent job of making the helm to the measurments that I sent him of my gord.

the only real things I can see "wrong" with this helm is some minor buffing residew in the nicks and around the rivets of the helm.

All and all I give Krag 2 thumbs up on this product. Especially since I got this helm for $190.00, thats right $190.00 Image :P

in the Next couple of weeks I will post a Performance review of My New Helm.

Here are the original sketches of the helm I sent Krag to build it from.

Here are some real crappy pics of me wearing my new helm. Sorry for the quality, I blame it on an extremely crappy camera. Image

Cool helm, But I think you stole it!
How will you line it?

Looks like it's a bit long in your pics. if it is, the bottom of the grill can be bent out a bit. I add the little extra due to a recent trend of marshals requesting additional "stuff" to be added to the front base/neck to prevent a spearshot or magic cat's ass from penetrating. In the rear, the slats can be bent out a hair more. The base rivet will prevent them from bending more than 1/4", but if needed, they could be removed and the slats bent up to an 1".
Let me know how it fits after padding and such.

Actually Krag it fits perfect.

My eyes will go in between the first and second grille bars very nicely.

I would much rather have the helm long like that. ( I hate tall gorgets, I have a bad gag reflex)

the front of the helm is perfect, no need to bend anything there. I might and I stress might bend out the slats.

But I am going to padd it and try it out at Lillies (hopefully) and make adjustments that I might need after wearing it in a battle situation.

Halbreds:
Eventually this helm will get a "period" type Liner, but for Lillies I am going to have to go with blue foam wrapped in cloth. But there are plans for a tow or cotton stuffed cloth liner.

And No I did not steal it. You are just jealous :P:P:P:P Image Image Image
