Shield Boss

OK, I remember that I want to use approx. a 9 inch disc to construct a shield boss... and I want about a 1 inch flange on it... but... how deep is a "normal" shield boss? I've seen very shallow ones to ones that must be six inches deep that almost must have been 2 pieces welded.

I make em from 13ga mild.
8" overall diameter
1" flange
6" diameter dished area
2"+ deep

That's what I was thinking that I was told before... I'm going to have to try one tonight... I'll post a pic as soon as one is available.

Well, I made my first one out of 14 gauge mild steel today. Took a little longer than I had hoped (about one hour, 15 min.), but that included a little experimentation and fussing about with the process. All in all, I was satisfied with the result. I'll be posting a pic as soon as I can (haven't made a new item in awhile, critiques will be welcome).
Also, I'll be adding shield bosses as a new item to my site likely within a week. Thanks for all the help I have gotten here.

If you'd like to compare there's pics of mine in the accessories section of my site. The quality of my bosses is quite a bit better now though. The finish is better, the line where the flange meets the dished area is crisper and they're a little deeper and smoother.
Try not to undercut my price by too much will ya?

Well Matt, your bosses are way nicer than mine... but it takes me years to get good at something

I don't think I'll be any real competition for you on the net... but I've been asked about them at events so many times, I thought it'd be a nice addition to my "small items" list.

I hope mine are nicer then your first one. I think I've made over 200 of them to date.
Anyway I'll be happy to offer some suggestions when you post your pics. Be sure to post your method along with the pics.

Well, I can tell you right up front, mine has that slightly dimpled look that comes from imperfect planishing. (visible upon close inspection) and some scarring in the flange area do to poor initial work-surface choices. My future ones won't have that problem. Though mine has decent shape, it's not quite as perfectly "popped up" as yours.
Oh, and on the price thing, don't worry. I don't intend to undercut you at all. Mine will be $25 also. I'll see if I can get a pic up by the weekend.
