I do, and it's comfy, but mine aren't made of steel.

Articulated-lame spaudlers, probably not viable -- think of all those edges to catch on your mail. But a single dished plate, or series of plates, covered with something stout like light leather might do what you want -- rather like a customized version of wearing lacrosse pads under your mail.

This reminds me of somthing that Chef may best be able to answer: I've encountered a couple of illustrations and an effigy of transitional armours with mail as the main shoulder defense and a rather mysterious disc 2-3 inches in diameter at or just inside of the shoulder point. What is this unobtrusive disc that just barely protrudes from under the camail? How is it attached? Is it alone there or is it the extremity of some more comprehensive neck and shoulder defense? An illustration I've examined shows it worn with covered breastplate, under a jupon. Might it be an extension to one side of the shoulder straps?

If I have hijacked the thread, I apologize, and will start a different one.

They are <Whispers> plastic, simple spaulders, and point to my aketon. They work very well, and have picked up a few neat patterns from having the mail driven into the material. From a purest standpoint steel would be better. But as they are under the mail, I wanted them to be essentially invisible, rust proof and light weight. I could also have used hardened leather, I had plastic kicking around and my water hardening technique tends to yield very small rather brittle pieces of leather that vaguely look ike what I had intended.
