Does anyone know the "correct" method for welding butted rin

Post by The Black Prince »

I want to go back after my current hauberk project is finished and weld the rings shut.
I need a small, accurate welder that will not cause enough heat to distort the ring or the surrounding rings.
I thought a small spot welder would work, but they seem to be meant for overlapped metals.
You seem to be one of the "elders" POD, so help me out on this one! (insert BIG smiley)

I'm not really an elder - just a nut with too much time on his hands to post frequently Image I started a thread on this about a month ago, but like a fool, I deleted it. Sorry I can't help much.

Actually, if you want to be period, you have to get a dragon to breathe fire on the links and then pound them. What! I saw it in a movie! Image

All of the welded maille I own was made with a spot welder with a special jig. (Which jig? I don't know, he wouldn't show me.) All of the rings were overlapped before the weld, though just barely. The good thing about welding the rings is that you can go with a much smaller gauge wire and still have superior strength. Probably wouldn't work well with 14g+ but it does a nice job on my 16g hauberk and 18g coif.

well the period way would be to forge weld them, however an arc welder that can be adjusted down to 5 amps ought to work also. even better would be a spot welder (resistance welder/contact welder)
