I plan on eventually fighting in SCA tourneys and the like. After searching through different armour sites I noticed that different people used different guages on different parts. I want to know what would be a good gauge for gauntlets if I were to fight. Most of the ones I see are 18 gauge for most, and then 20 for the fingers. Would this be strong enough? Thanks,
Kerrigan
Edit: Here are the gauntlets just in case: http://www.varmouries.com/gau_10.html

Gauge of Steel for Gauntlets
I am with the crowd that thinks that reasonable finger gauntlets should be legal... and technically they are legal according to society rules. However, several kingdoms have put a ban on them. Also, in several kingdoms, they hit so hard that you'd be well advised not to wear them even if they are legal.
Mitten gauntlets are pretty much the rule. It's true that they're not great for a lot of periods, but working fingers are better than authenticity, in my mind...
I have a pair of gauntlets that are 18g stainless, and that's about the least beefy I'd be willing to go.
I would also suggest that you try to avoid floating articulations anywhere on your hands. Try to be sure that all the pieces are riveted together and overlap so that any force eventually gets distributed to the back of your hand.

I don't know which kingdom you are interested in, But In the two kingdoms I have lived in, these gauntlets, while beautiful, are not legal.
The marshal will want to see the plates extending all the way from one side of the hand (touching the sword hilt) to the other side of the hand, again touching the sword hilt.
I see not reason these gauntlets would not be legal with a basket hilt, but that's kind of defeating the purpose.
Boy those are pretty though.
