i was looking through my "armour bible" tm. and noticed something, the greathelms on page 200, 369, 370 there is the breathes, but then there is a whole other set of holes, there appears to be a row of holes along the upper edge of the bottom plates(bottom of the top plates on one of the helms on 370), just below th rivits, then there is sets of 4 holes at the quarters of the helmet.
does anyone have any idea what these are for, are they just extra breathes, or are they for atatching something or some other thing i havent even thought of?
btw, the armour bible is techniques of medieval armour reproduction

I am just making a guess here but I would say for a liner and maybe some of the higher ones are for tying/attaching decorative bits (can't think of the proper name. They are the stuffed headbands or papermache figures that go on top. Torsk?).

The image on page 200 is a good example. The rivets just above the ocular most likely attach to a leather band, to which the helm liner is stiched. This approach keeps you from having stitching on the exterior of the helm, keeps from rivets touching your head, and makes the liner more easily detached for cleaning. The pairs of holes above the nasal flange, near the top plate, futher back on the sides of the helm are very likely for attaching a helm crest or torse. Due to the numeber involved, I'd guess it was something fairly elaborate like a full crest. It's possible that the liner was tacked down through these points, or even that a chin strap was attached to some nearer the ear, but those uses are more speculative.

Hehe, actually I knew that. We always ate torsk (or poorman's lobster as we called it) on Fridays for lent when I was growing up. But it was the only word that would come to mind when trying to think of torse
