Pictures of me in my first kit

Post by Bartok »

I finally have some pictures of me in my SCA armour! Thanks go all round for the advice I got and the wonderful articles and patterns people have posted here.

>My Armour</a>

The armour was made between September (a few weeks after my first fight practice) and November (my first event) except the helm which was finished in March or April due to time constraints.

I hope to eventually fix/replace the attrocities. Real life priorities will put that off for at least a couple months...

Looks great! I am a big fan of sugarloaf helms myself!

Hi Bartok,
Nicely done! I was going to gently suggest some changes, but you already hit all of them on the webpage -- so, good job!

Your friend Ivan is more along the lines of my expertise anyway.. do you have better pics of him? Looks like he has a good Mongol kit going (doesn't look really Rus, but it seems to be a WELL done mongol kit)

Right here</a> I really like his armor in general, but his helm is extra sweet

Thanks Steve Image The sugarloaf is the coolest looking helm IMO. I've just had a new guy ask me to make him one too even though his friend was urging him to get a bargrilled helm Image

Bob, thank you.

Janos, I can't explain why it doesn't work for you. I've reloaded it a few times, it seems fine Image

Jean, there were a few reasons. It was cold and raining that day and the biggest patch of grass was hidden from the building by bushes. So we used the parking lot with its greater visability to attract attention. Since the ground was wet, the grass could have been torn up and that would have made the owner surly...

Dmitry, I'll check with Ivan if he has some more pictures of himself and pass along your compliment. He's been in for years but is just discovering the joy of authenticity. Any reccomendations you can make would be appriciated. As for my own kit, I'm glad it looks like I know my flaws! Far better to know now so that I won't miss anything and waste time and/or money...

Torr, you would have to have a picture of the practice where I forgot my boots wouldn't you Image I don't tend to wear my tabbard or hosen at practice, just for events and demos. I think I might have to revise that policy for the Distant Shore practice since it's really public...

Bartok,
Give him a link to the Red Kaganate (in my sig), I think he'll find that there's lots of stuff he's interested in on that site.

Excellent! That's very impressive, and viewed with your comments shows you've put some heart AND research into it. Thank you!

I was fairly proud of my first kit and the fact that I waited until I had it until I did more than "taste" fighter practice. Your first kit fairly shames it.

I can only imagine where you'll be three years, then ten years, from now.

Again, outstanding job.

Dimitry, I've passed the links along to Ivan. He's delighted that you like his kit Image

Bob Hurley, thank you for compliments. I suspect you're selling yourself short or underestimating the flaws in my work! Congratulations on making armour for your first time too. I'm begining to think newbies get armoured up faster if we have to make armour before we get to do more than practice out of armour. It keeps us hungry as opposed to figuring we can borrow often enough to get our fix. Though to be honest I prefer making armour to fighting!

I've read as much as I can, it always seems there's more to learn and refine. I need to live near a better library or become fabulously wealthy to buy more books Image

Owen, Lynxicanus, eoghan_mw; Thank you Image

Good job, doing it right the first time is a great way to go. Damn man! Your first kit is nicer than my current kit, and I've been doing this for over a decade.

I usually wear my first ugly prototype, or whatever half assed thing I quickly cobbled together, until it falls apart from old age and abuse. Then I quickly patch it or make myself another crappy something to "just get me by until I can do it right". The problem is I never seem to have the time to do it right for myself, only when working on stuff for others.

Guess I need to start making armor for my own use, but if I did it your way I'd already have it.
