Pictures of new projects

Post by Prince Of Darkmoor »

Just thought I'd post a few pictures of some recently completed armour bits.

16ga stainless half legs with brass trim. These are the final piece of a full suit (minus helmet) commission we've been working on since March. It's GOOD to finally wipe a big commission like this from the list! Image I'm pretty happy with the way they came out and may make myself some legs similar to these in the future.

2 pairs of spaulders that we have in stock. One pair is already spoken for but the other pair is still available. Also 16ga stainless, strapped.

Some shield bosses for Galileo. 12ga mild steel. The two rectangular ones are being used on scutums. I'm going to have a hard time letting these leave the shop Image

These, along with the spaulders, were made for an event last month but we did not sell all of them, so I am throwing them on our In Stock page which is still being worked on.

Thanks Image

Sasuke, we dish the shield bosses in a bottomless dish with a special setup my dad made. I use a 3lb rawhide mallet to do most of the dishing with until I reach my desired depth and then I smooth things out from the inside with a 1lb rawhide mallet. To make sure the boss is smooth, I'll run my fingers on the inside of the bowl to feel for high spots and then I'll tap those out with the small hammer. No planishing required Image

Cool. I would love to see the setup. Is it similar to what Mad Matt uses?

Very nice work. I can see the camera in the steel.

Looks like you are moving up to the big boy league no?

Best of luck in your work. Hal.

Ps: I guess I hate you too. Sort of, but not really. Know what I mean? **Green Eyed**

Being called a master armourer would be nice, but I've got a ton of stuff to learn and a few decades more experience to gain before I might start to feel comfortable with the term "Master."

Hal, I know what you mean. I hate you too for making that kickass skull face plate look sooo easy Image

Rahter like the spaulders and legs. Gauntlets arent half bad either. How did you do the articulation for the legs?

Hey POD question for you...what is the articulation on the clamshells wrist like... from this angle it looks like ...leather?

Dark Uncle, for the legs I just use a washer on the inside of my rivet. I've thought about using sliding rivet articulation on the legs, though.

Drake, it is leather. This summer I plan to modify and come up with some new patterns and making an articulating steel wrist on these gauntlets is pretty high up there for me. I don't much care for the leather articulation, but if it worked for Andy Ward...

Beautiful. Really beautiful work. I'm only jealous of your youth, and that you've come so far, so fast, so young and have so many years of perfecting yourself ahead of you.

I think with every "pics of new projects" you post, you should post a link to what you were making and saying at the time you arrived on the Archive :) Have I already suggested that?

I must agree with the Wombat.

I have got to hand it to you Clay. When you first joined the Archive, and showed us your first suit you fought in, I was thinking, "This guy is gonna get killed before he can make anything to save his life!"

You have done very well, and your extreme fighting hasn't killed you yet. You quieted your flames down... watched, learned, and stuck with it. Very well done indeed.

Yeah and he even writes more or less intelligent stuff these days.

Really nice work Clay. Much applause. Sorry I am not making it to Pensic this year, would have liked to have had a turn on your dance card.

Clay, I continue to be impressed by how good you have gotten in such a short time. I only hope that when I finally accumulate my tools and my shop I can get half as good in a little over twice as long.

Are you still making welded helmet tops?

CBA - I only mention it because of the inspiration it would provide to others, a la, "Look what he started with, and where he is now - there's hope for me!!!".

That sort of thing ;)
