Goofy idea?

The other day I was poking around my messy garage when I found an old body armor made of galvanized lamellar plates riveted to leather. It's a long story why this armor is constructed this way, but the plates are on the outside, and there is no side armor (I gave up using this armor 'cause I cracked a rib in it).
But the armor got me to thinking. What if I removed the plates, cleaned them up (soaking them in Coke over night, and scrubbing them), and then re-riveting them to new leather, only having the plates on the inside. Also, I would make new plates for both my sides.
Basically, I would be make a CoP out of revamped armor. Something a'la late 13th or early 14th century. I would look about for a barrel or pembridge helm to go along with it.
Waddya think? Too goofy?
Mord.
