Cutomizing a Bascinet (possible Archive Mirror Article)

The work is not mine and it may have been posted here before, but I just found it and wanted to share. The article is nicely done, has pictures and is well worth a glance and possible consideration by the Editors for inclusion here as a mirror or article whichever works out best.

Oh, stop- if you make my head swell any more (and that's saying something) the damn helmet won't fit me.
Actually, I'm still tweaking this project, so maybe when I finish the mk. III liner, have my grill visor back from being welded by Thaddeus, and do a new fingerloop braid for a vervelle cord, it'll be ready for prime time...

Hell of a good job so far. Can I aks what is wrong with the Mark II version of your liner?

Too lumpy. It was only my second experiment with raw cotton as opposed to batting, and either I didn't spread it thinly enough or didn't quilt it at enough points to compress it suitably, probably both. I think I was trying too literally to get SCA-mandated padding thickness of 1/2", which really isn't needed with a proper suspension liner. Following a conversation with Robert Macpherson at the ARS conference, in which he mentioned that none of the period liners he'd ever seen was "thicker than a potholder," I started up a new liner using 5 layers of 1/8" commercial batting and a hell of a lot more quilting divisions. It compresses down nicely and feels less like an insulated bag over my head, but I haven't worn it in combat yet...
