Ok.... Been workin on a new persona, which will be a 10 century norse man... so far this is what i got...

I made a somewhat abbreviated coat of plates kinda, incorporating thick leather and plastic plates, to cover my torso, upper arms, and thighs...

This would of course be worn under my tunic...

Than a pair of bazubands for the fore arm and elbow( not exactly period I know)

A pair of knee cops hidden under the pants, my shins are covered by the woolen wrapping...

I'm still unsure of how to go about the gorget and gauntlets...

and I eventually want to get, or make, a chainmail byrnie to go over the tunic and under armour.... but that will be later... not all vikings fought in it, so fighting in just the under armour would be ok....

and I would like a helm suggestion if you guys have one, as I know not which armourers are doing the norse....

Well it's real easy, spangenhelm, the basis for any norseman persona. I prefer to see plates rivetted together rather than a spun top helm, but i'm an accuracy nut. As for gorget and gaunts, that's a lil bit tougher. I do have a pattern for leather waxed gaunts but it still does not appear period, but more period than half gaunts. haha

Master Mael Marden lives about 10 mile from you. He makes very nice SCA Sutton Hoo style helms.

I will speek to Master Mael Mardane when I get a chance...

That still leaves me wonderin about the gorget, gauntlets, and whether or not not I would look atrocious wearing the vambraces...

The only problem is, Sutton Hoo is not Norse, nor is the helm even Vikng or 10th Century. Try the 7th Century, and there has been arguement that that helm was made even earilier than that.

There are instances of helms, however. The best example is the Gjermudnr helm from Norway. There is also a fragment from Denmark (a nasal and eyebrows), and a good possibility of helms from Eastern Europe--Poland Kiev.

The lamellar from Birka is also thoguht to be from the East.
