Polishing mild steel

Post by Cerebus »

After years of lurking and playing mainly with plastic. I've decided to try my hands at metal armour nothing too complicated to start with, something akin to a char-ai-ne (sp?). But the steel I got is pretty dirty, I was wondering what process you guys used to get a nice finish. Satin or mirror. Would a drill with different grit wheels be sufficient?

There are several ways to polish. A lot of folks will use varying grades of sand paper. Start with coarse stuff, and work to the finer grits. You can do it by hand, or with a belt sander. I generally use silicon carbide wheels on my angle grinder to get a satin finish, then use cloth wheels on my bench grinder with varying grades of rouge to get a mirror polish.
Be sure to file your edges well!
