Afternoon Folks,
I have a question... or better put a problem. Is it possible to cover a SCA gorget with a thin layer of quilted material to make it resemble the collar of an akton? My gorget is late period (gotta love that yoke protection!), and I want to keep it in the spirit of my budding late 13th Century kit.
Also, how feisable is it to have hiddden armour under the akton and yet keep it's correct profile?

Very possible. As the shoe ad once said, Just Do it.

Just insert some strips of hard leather or pickle bucket plastic in the stuffed channels of the gambeson over the kidneys to meet the SCA requirements. Should work fine, and if done right ought to be totally undetectable.

I fight in a gambeson with plastic lamellar under it and chainmail over it, works okay for me but I want to point out one thing that experience has taught me....

peoples definition of "padded armor" is definitely different!

My aketon is cotton lining, two layers of cotton batting & cotton oustide, my intention with it being to make the chainmail more comfortable and look like I'm wearing padded armor only. If you are going to wear just and aketon and get hit with a stick make sure you're packing the channels tight enough to actually protect you for a rattan sword.

I definately agree, my setup (that is about to be made) is going to be 4-5 layers of cotton batting on the body, and about 2-3 down the arms. There is just lacrosse arms and a kidney belt (that might get replaced by plastic pouch bits). I have worn two or three layers of clothing (simulating multiple layers of cloth) and it didnt work so great.

If you pack it as hard as you can, it works for "rigid" protection. I didn't wear anything protective under it.

Thats a really sweet kit! You dont see such things out in my neck of the woods. Most folks here are either Norse, Japanese, or late 14th. Not that theres anything wrong with that but it would be nice to see more 12th and 13th century kits.

this is from the woods battle at Pennsic so I am not wearing my turn shoes (wear them every other battle) or my chain mail, I have my plastic vambraces on the outside of my gambeson which I never do and I'm wearing my stainless shoulders that I don't wear when fighting sword & shield.

I'm in the process of rebuilding this kit and will be adding a collar to this gambeson so the gorget doesn't show, making new vambraces that fit better so I can wear them under the gambeson without them shifting around like these, making new gamboised cuisses and shoulders that will tie to the straps of my body armor and be hidden under the gambeson.

I posted pictures of the legs I wear now in the Classified/Want Ads as a review of Mad Matt's greaves, seen here http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=59043 they don't go with my kit time wise but are better than my old legs.

Well... I think your kits pretty spiff. With the lam, gameson and mail... do you have any binding or lack of mobility?
